About
MicroHabitat grows food on rooftops and in buildings in cities across Canada and the United States. About sixty of us work mostly from a distance: farmers on the roofs, a head office in Montréal. This village is where we meet every day. Now other companies can have one too.
Who makes it
MicroHabitat sets up and looks after urban farms for companies and the buildings they work in. Most of the team is out on a roof or at home, in cities across Canada and the United States, with a head office in Montréal.
A team spread out like that needs somewhere to run into each other, and a chat app never gave us that. So we drew a village, gave everyone a desk, and let people walk up and talk.
The office we work in
Nothing here is a mock-up. These are places on our own map, named the way the map names them.

A bench, a noticeboard and the gong.

Farming offices 1 to 30, eight seats each.

A room for 20, and a hall for 72.
How it came to be
Before
Our staff already ran the farms on our own platform. The first office was built there, for our team alone.
We started over: a new floor, a private office for everyone, meeting rooms, and voices that fade with distance.
virtualoffice.world went live. Any team can open an office of its own, sealed off from ours.
Built in the open
We'd rather say what runs the office than keep it vague. The art is other people's work, credited by name. The servers are ours.
A pixel-art village. The people, the office rooms and the city pieces come from three art packs, credited here as they are in the office:
A LiveKit media server we host ourselves carries the sound and the video.
A world server of our own keeps track of where everyone is standing and who can hear whom.
virtualoffice.world runs on Vercel.
